Building on the success of the priority hours last semester organized by the Learn To Be chapter at the University of Texas at Austin, more tutors at our chapters around the nation will be ready to serve LTB students starting Wednesday, January 18, 2012, when the priority hours program will recommence.

Learn To Be is a free one-on-one interactive tutoring service. Session requests are taken up by volunteers who are mostly college students. We offered priority hours during the fall 2011 semester when tutors got together on campus to serve students during a number of dedicated hours throughout the week. Around 85% of all sessions requested were picked up during our priority hours, compared to the 50% pickup rate during our other operating hours.

We will release our schedule as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee session pickups though students at our partnership programs do receive priority. You can expect regular priority hours on Mondays through Thursdays and on weekends throughout the regular US university academic year.

Below is the archived message from fall 2011

We constantly receive feedback from our students that tutors are not picking up the sessions during certain times of the week. We then hear from our tutors that whenever they log in on our platform there are no students requesting sessions, or the student has already left a requested session. This is quite common given our vast operating hours.

The Learn To Be Team has heard your sentiments, and we will be releasing the following times as "priority hours" when there are guaranteed to be tutors on the platform. This is made possible through the Learn To Be Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin, where 10-20 tutors get together in a room at the following times, with their laptops and headsets, ready to help LTB students.

All times are in the Pacific timezone. For example, you would need to add three hours to convert to times on the East Coast.

* In general we have very limited tutors available on Sundays. So the few priority hour tutors we have are likely busy working with a number of students.

We will continue to update this page as more time frames become available.

If you go to an elementary, middle or junior high school with an after school program where students can use a computer lab, or if you know of schools or community centers with such a setup, please invite them to contact us by submitting a Site Partnership form. We would be happy to remotely staff a computer lab and provide individualized help. We want to get all students who are falling behind to help themselves by logging on to Learn To Be, and eventually catch up and excel in all of their core classes.

Tips for students:

  • Please always be patient. Our tutors are busy providing individualized attention to other students. One trick to help pass the time is to leave your tutoring session open in one window, and open up a useful video from http://www.learntobe.org/videos in another window. Have your earphones or headset plugged in and ready so when your tutor enters the room you can hear him or her calling out to you.

  • Round-the-clock on-demand tutoring is still available between 9am and 9pm Pacific Time. This is merely an enhancement to our offerings. To check regular (non-priority hour) tutor availability: http://www.learntobe.org/schedule.php
