Get to know Kacey and her family better

Please describe your student and why you qualify for tutoring.
When I was 7 years old, my family moved to America in hopes of a better education and future for and siblings and me. Most of the money we had was spent within the first couple of years of trying to cope with a new location and culture. I am grateful for my parents' decision to move, but it has left us with very little money to spend on extra activities that are not required like tutoring. Although I see the positive effects of tutoring for my friends who can afford it, the cost of tutoring is too much for me to even consider it. On top of that, I am an identical twin, so anything I want to do is basically double the price (as my sister would want to do it also). As a result, tutoring is very expensive for my family. This is why I would be so thankful if I could receive tutoring through Learn to Be. I am motivated and willing to work hard in order to acquire better grades in school. With tutoring, I will be more able to achieve the goal my parents had in mind when we moved to America.

What are you most grateful for?
I am most grateful for moving to the US 10 years ago. Even though we start a new life from the beginning and English is not my first language, but my 3 children can have better education opportunity and have a happy childhood. We move from Hong Kong; the education system ruin their childhood because it is very strict and competitive, even since kindergarten. Now, they can choose their favorite activity and learn the thing that they like or they want.

Please describe specifically what your student needs help with.
I am struggling with the topics covered in AP Chemistry.

According to the student, how can we make the world a better place?
I firmly believe that helping others is truly the best way to make this world a better place. Not only do the people benefit, but the person helping also feels better, knowing they just made someone's life better. I also think everyone should help in some way, as they are able to; people who are more fortunate than others in any way should help the less fortunate. I put this belief into action by volunteering at various locations including a hospital, animal shelter, elementary schools, and a riding program for handicapped children. I honestly love helping out with these organizations because I get to offer my knowledge for elementary school tutoring and abilities while putting a smile on their faces every day.

What is the student's favorite book?
Although this is a very difficult decision since I love so many books, I would have to say my favorite book is "The Fault In Our Stars". I first read it in 8th grade when it was not yet as popular, and I fell in love with John Green's writing style and the meaning behind all of it. I especially like the way John Green includes extended metaphors throughout the entire book and underlying themes that cannot be noticed unless you look closely. Despite it being a tear-jerking book, I have re-read it at least 3 times front to back. Every time I read it again, I love it more. I love the way it provides insight into Hazel's life as a cancer patient, and I love the development of Hazel and Augustus' relationship. Although this sounds very cliché, reading this book was truly the turning point in my life. As a 12-year-old reading it for the first time, I had very little knowledge about illnesses in this world. This book opened a whole new world to me, and I have helped in hospitals and donated to cancer research funds since.
