I have a rising 5th grader who hates being tutored. She for sure can't help that! Since her mom said one area the student needs help with is understanding vocabulary, I started teaching her Greek and Latin roots. She knows 14 Greek roots and 1 Latin root right now. IXL has a Greek/Latin root section, which surprised me in a great way. So, I had my student do an exercise where she had to choose the correct definition of words. She doesn't say much, but I could tell by her face she was a little surprised at getting every definition correct. Often, she only knew one part of a word, but it was enough to point her to the correct definition. She still hates being tutored, but at least we both saw progress.
