What it is

The highest honor Congress gives to young people

Congress created the award in 1979 to recognize young people for service, initiative, and achievement. It is not a competition and there is no minimum GPA. You set goals in four areas and meet them at your own pace.

Voluntary Public Service
Unpaid service that helps your community, like tutoring a kid who needs help.
Personal Development
Get better at something you care about, like an instrument, a language, or coding.
Physical Fitness
A fitness goal outside of gym class, like running, swimming, or a school sport.
Expedition or Exploration
A trip that takes you out of your routine, like camping or exploring a new city. A virtual option is also allowed.

We are your Advisor for the service part

Your tutoring hours count, and you earn Learn To Be badges as they grow

Why we advise only the Silver and Gold Medals

We are a small team, so we put our time where it helps kids most: tutors who stay with their students for a year or more. That is what changes a kid’s school year. The Silver and Gold Medals take at least 12 and 24 months of service, so the award asks for the same commitment our kids need. If you are that kind of tutor, we will work with you every step of the way, to help your student and to help you earn the award.

Why tutor with Learn To Be

The best way to earn your service hours

Service is the biggest requirement at every medal level. Tutoring fills it steadily, week after week, and keeps every month active.

1

Tutoring counts as service

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and tutoring is direct service to kids in your community and across the country. That is exactly what the service area asks for.

2

Your hours are logged for you

Every session is logged for you automatically, with the date and length. No spreadsheet to keep for two years.

3

We can be your service Advisor

Going for the Silver or Gold Medal? We act as your Advisor for the service part. We help you set your service goal, check in as you go, and sign off on your service hours.

4

Fits your schedule

Tutor online from home, on evenings or weekends. No ride needed.

5

Real impact

You work 1-on-1 with a kid from an under-resourced family. Tutoring is free for the families we serve.

6

A story worth telling

Tutoring the same student for a year or two makes a strong story for college and scholarship essays.

Rules that trip students up

These rules catch students after months of work. Know them before you start.

Register first
The day you register is your Activity Start Date. Nothing before it counts, so register early.
No class credit or pay
Hours that are paid, earn class credit, or meet a graduation requirement do not count.
No double dipping
One activity counts in one area only. Soccer cannot count for both fitness and personal development.
Months need at least 1 hour
A month counts only if you log at least 1 hour in that area that month. The months do not need to be back to back.
8 hours per day at most
You can count at most 8 hours of activity in one day.
Mostly direct service
At least 75% of your service hours must be time spent helping people. Planning, training, and fundraising can be at most 25%.
