Our Reading Program is built on the UFLI Foundations curriculum — the same evidence-based phonics sequence used in classrooms across the country. Every student gets a 1-on-1 tutor, a clear starting point, and a path to fluent grade-level reading.
Three steps, repeated every session. Each one has its own tool inside Learn To Be — so tutors don't need to source materials, and parents always know what's happening.
A short oral check that finds the exact UFLI lesson where the student is ready to begin. No skipping ahead, no boring re-teaches — every student starts at the right point.
For tutors
Run the Reading Placement Test in the Learning Hub at your first session. It walks the student through 11 sets of letter sounds and high-frequency words and tells you the UFLI lesson to start at.
UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) Foundations is a structured phonics curriculum that introduces sounds, letter patterns, and decoding strategies one step at a time. Tutors work through it in order so nothing gets skipped.
For tutors
Open the UFLI Foundations courses below and run the next lesson with the student. Each lesson is broken into small interactive widgets — say-the-sound, tap-the-word, sentence reading — so you're never staring at a wall of text. Aim for one lesson per 30-minute session.
Short, age-appropriate stories that use only the sounds the student has learned so far — so practice turns into real reading. Reading whole sentences builds confidence and prosody (the rhythm of fluent reading).
For tutors
End each session with a quick story from Decodable Stories in the Learning Hub. Pick one matched to the sounds you just covered. Have the student read it once for accuracy, then a second time for speed.
The goal of every session: get the student to read grade-level text fluently — fast, accurate, and confident.
Fluency — reading speed combined with accuracy — is the strongest predictor of a student's reading success. We use the Hasbrouck & Tindal Oral Reading Fluency norms (75th percentile, spring), the same standard schools use across the country. These are our end-of-year targets:
Take the Reading Fluency Test →
| Grade | End-of-year goal (words per minute) |
|---|---|
| Kindergarten | 20 wpm |
| Grade 1 | 91 wpm |
| Grade 2 | 124 wpm |
| Grade 3 | 139 wpm |
| Grade 4 | 160 wpm |
| Grade 5 | 169 wpm |
| Grade 6 | 173 wpm |
| Grade 7 | 177 wpm |
| Grade 8 | 177 wpm |
| Grade 9+ | 180 wpm |
Accuracy goal: 95% across all grades.
The structured phonics courses your tutor will work through with the student. Each one is a sequence of small, interactive lessons.
